Five Reasons Why Students Fail The IELTS Exam

Five Reasons Why Students Fail The IELTS Exam

Number 1 - You booked your exam, but you were not ready.

One of the main reasons students fail their exam is that they book their exam even though they are literally not ready. Especially students who have never taken the exam before. We call this the car crash scenario. They take the exam in a month's time - have little knowledge about the requirements or the exam, don't get the score they need and decide never to take it again. The reason this is called the car crash scenario is the following:

When you learn to drive a car you really wouldn't dream of taking your test before you could drive or you may crash the car. Furthermore, your instructor really wouldn't recommend you take it if you weren't ready, as you will damage their car, which they rely on to teach others and give lessons to.

We live in a very fast paced society and everyone wants quick service and quick results without paying a lot of money either. If they pay for a degree they want amazing grades, but don't want to study a lot. Similarly, people want fast results when it comes to the IELTS exam.

Number 2 - You assumed it's going to be easy and you're not willing to put in the study time.

The IELTS exam is going to be tough and challenging. If you are not prepared to study hard for it - you're already on your way to disappointment.

You can't just write 250 words for your essay, tick some a,b,c - true or false answers and then get a band 7 - go to university or emigrate. If it was that easy everyone would be doing it. You will need to study hard and work for it.

Number 3 - You have a weak study ethic.

If you have a weak study ethic with no clear aim. You will most likely not pass either. You will need to plan your studies, be consistent and put 110% into every study session.

Number 4 - You don't really want to study.

If you're not really interested in studying further and have no interest in really taking the exam, but you are being pressured to do so - this will probably be reflected in your final results.

Number 5 - You're taking the exam for the wrong reasons.

Similarly, linked to number 4 if you are taking the exam for the wrong reasons and on a whim. You're not likely to want to really take it seriously, so you will probably end up with a disappointing score overall and give up quite quickly.
